Another NYE Celebration In The Big Apple For Phish

Phish in Massachusetts in 2011 - Photo Credit: Holly O'Connor

While fans ravenously speculated whether or not Phish would even play for New Year's Eve, the band announced they will be doing four nights in New York City's Madison Square Garden. The group has played MSG almost two dozen times, including a 2010 countdown of epic proportions and a handful of other NYE celebrations.

Last year's spectacle at the Garden included the quartet riding on a giant hot dog (or "Meatstick", if you will) while stage performers acted out the "Meatstick" dance and sang its chorus in at least six different languages as if the dance was modeled after an actual Broadway play. People saw the giant hot dog shaped red balloons the band was tossing out of the salchicha-craft all over the city when the show let out.

Tickets are on sale from now until Monday, October 24 at noon EDT via Phish Ticketing. Tickets on sale to the public on Saturday, October 29 at noon EDT via Ticketmaster.

September 2 – Dick's Sporting Goods Park – Commerce City, CO

Set I: Sample In A Jar, Sparkle, The Sloth, Sweet Virginia, Suskind Hotel, Strange Design, Stash, Sneakin’ Sally Through The Alley > Sparks > Scent Of A Mule, Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan, Shine A Light, Split Open And Melt, The Squirming Coil
Set II: Sand, Simple > Steam > Soul Shakedown Party > Seven Below > Suzy Greenberg > Scents and Subtle Sounds > Slave To The Traffic Light > Silent In The Morning > Sanity, Sweet Adeline
Encore: Sabotage

Crowd Atmosphere: The energy of all three nights was palpable in the air. All the right elements were in place for an explosive run – not to mention it being three late summer shows taking place against the backdrop of the Rockies.

A monumental bookend to what’s been an amazing summer – with no indication of when the next chapter will begin. The crowd was well rested and ready to help push the band’s energy to new heights.

Best Song: Sand – Phish brought the heat once again on one of their newest jam favorites.

Best Jam: Steam – The best version to date of this new tune. It featured an exhilarating peak from the band that expertly lands right back into the final verse. It’s no secret the band is pushing the pedal to the floor on this song.

Best Segue: Simple > Steam – Blissful ambient soundscapes pulled us out of the “Simple” jam into groovy opening licks of “Steam.”

Sloppiest Moment: Squirming Coil

Twitter Recap: One of the most unusual shows of Phish’s tenure – a show of all “S” songs. The show surprisingly has great flow and it’s a testament to their immense catalog that they can pull it off.

“Stash” and “Sneakin’ Sally” provided a mid-first set highlight. The show included a host of bust-outs that hadn’t been touched since the 90s including “Sparks,” “Sweet Adeline” and Beastie Boys' staple “Sabotage.”

September 3 – Dick's Sporting Goods Park – Commerce City, CO

Set I: Possum, The Moma Dance, The Wedge, Ocelot, The Divided Sky, Funky Bitch, Axilla > Llama, Fast Enough For You, Wolfman’s Brother
Set II: Down With Disease > Tweezer > Golden Age > Limb By Limb, Kill Devil Falls > Also Sprach Zarathustra > Light* > Julius > Cavern, Run Like An Antelope
Encore: Sleeping Monkey > Tweezer Reprise
* = with "Down With Disease" reprise

Best Song: Run Like an Antelope – Ripping version highlighting Trey’s confidence that night and punctuating one of the best sets of the year.

Best Jam: Tweezer – One of the most unique “Tweezer” jams that Phish has graced us with. It features a patient, stirring and euphoric build-up that left all in attendance breathless.

Best Segue: Down With Disease > Tweezer

Sloppiest Moment: Down with Disease > Tweezer – While overall a great segue, they jumped the gun just a bit too early making way for a slightly jarring landing into “Tweezer.”

Twitter Recap: Phish stepped it up in a big way on Saturday night, delivering one of the most complete shows of the year.

The first set was funky and energetic with Phish bringing standout versions of “Possum,” “Moma Dance,” “Divided Sky,” “Funky Bitch” and “Wolfman’s.”

Also of note, the “Kill Devil Falls” was one of the most rocking yet – featuring an extended peak even after the final chorus. The excellent “Light” jam also featured an unexpected and well executed “Down With Disease” reprise.

September 4 – Dick's Sporting Goods Park – Commerce City, CO

Set I: Maze, Back On The Train, Rift, Bathtub Gin, The Way It Goes, Halfway To The Moon, Gumbo, Halley’s Comet > Tube, Timber, Roses Are Free, Chalkdust Torture
Set II:
Rock And Roll > Come Together > Twist* > Piper > Harry Hood > Roggae > Ghost > Guy Forget > Ghost, Walls Of The Cave
Encore:
Backwards Down The Number Line
* = with "Low Rider" jam

Best Song: Harry Hood – A tight and immense version that provided a euphoric mid-set peak.

Best Jam: Bathtub Gin – Over 15 minutes of pure bliss featuring unique, interlocked grooves juxtaposed with thoughtful melodies from Trey.

Best Segue: Ghost > Guy Forget > Ghost – Impressively tight ripping jam/segue that seems plucked right out of the mid-90s.

Sloppiest Moment: Come Together – A really cool idea that unfortunately fell apart most of the song.

Twitter Recap: Hands down one of the best shows of the past decade. Picking highlights is almost impossible here. Standout versions of “Maze,” “Bathtub Gin,” “Rock And Roll,” “Twist,” “Piper,” “Harry Hood,” “Roggae,” “Ghost” and “Walls Of The Cave.” And I’m not being overzealous.

Most notably, we finally got the rocking “Ghost” we’ve all been waiting for. The best three night run of the year and an unforgettable experience for all those in attendance. That's how you close out a tour.

Phish To Play Benefit For Vermont Flood Recovery

Phish Vermont Flood Recovery

Fresh off what by most accounts was an epic Colorado run, Phish has annouced A Benefit for Vermont Flood Recovery taking place next Wednesday, September 14.

From Phish's Facebook:

"Phish will play a special show at Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction, VT next Wednesday, September 14th. The concert will benefit Vermont flood recovery efforts. In the wake of Hurricane Irene, Vermont experienced its worst flooding in a century, which devastated communities throughout the state.

"It's been heartbreaking to see all the loss and destruction that came from the storm," said Phish keyboardist Page McConnell. "Vermont is very much a part of who we are as a band. We're really looking forward to playing this show and we hope the money raised will make a difference in the recovery and rebuilding effort."

General admission tickets will be $75. In addition, a special "Friend of WaterWheel" package will be available for $250. It will include preferred parking, a reserved box seat, a limited edition poster and access to a Vermont craft beer tent. A very limited number of tickets are available directly through Phish Tickets' online ticketing system athttp://phish.portals.musictoday.com.

The ticket request period is currently underway and will end on Wednesday, September 7, at noon ET. Tickets will go on sale to the public on Saturday, September 10, at 10:00 AM ET. In order to ensure that a large allotment of tickets is available to local residents, the public onsale will be in-person and cash only. The box office location will be announced this Friday at http://phish.com, by email update and on local radio stations. There will be a limit of two tickets per person whether individuals are purchasing in person or during the online ticket request period.

Proceeds from the concert and merchandise sales will be directed to The WaterWheel Foundation and The Vermont Community Foundation to aid in the recovery of the Green Mountain State.

The WaterWheel Foundation was created by Phish in 1997 to oversee the band's various charitable activities. Fans can donate to The WaterWheel Foundation by clicking here. You should specify that they would like their contribution to go to Vermont flood recovery efforts. The Vermont Community Foundation was founded in 1986 and is Vermont's largest homegrown philanthropic foundation, managing a collection of over 600 charitable funds that invest more than $18 million annually in Vermont through grants, loans and other investments. In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, the Foundation worked with donors and other partners to facilitate donations for relief and recovery efforts, including the establishment of a fund to benefit Vermont farmers affected by the storm. Visitvermontcf.org or call 802-388-3355 for more information.

The show will be Phish's first in Vermont since 2004. Doors will open at 5:30 PM and the concert will begin at 7:00 PM."

PHISH in CHICAGO - REVIEWS

Second leg is winding down with Phish taking Chicago, IL's UIC Pavilion by storm for three nights of pure blissful jamming. With just three shows left on the tour, Phish is pulling out all the stops for what some people are calling their best playing in years. Check out what Sean Wilmsen had to say about the Chicago run below.

For a complete list of tour dates, check out Phish's official website.

--

August 15 – UIC Pavilion – Chicago, IL

Set I: Back On The Train > Rift > Guelah Papyrus, Scent of a Mule, Jesus Just Left Chicago, Wolfman's Brother, Anything But Me, Babylon Baby, Reba, Alumni Blues > Letter To Jimmy Page > Alumni Blues
Set II: Sand > Light > Dirt > Waves > Underwind > Steam > Fire
Encore: Camel Walk, Guyute, The Horse > Silent In The Morning, Harry Hood

Crowd Atmosphere: Walking into the venue I could tell the night was going to be electric. The crowd was buzzing with excitement for what was ahead of them, but I don’t think they knew what was about to be unleashed.

Best Song: Alumni Blues > Letter To Jimmy Page > Alumni Blues

Best Jam: Undermind

Best Segue: Waves > Undermind (flawlessly transitioned)

Sloppiest Moment: Fishman aborted many jams on this night. “Reba” was cut short because of Fish, and also during “Sand” and “Light” he stopped playing during a pretty solid jam, hinting a “needed” transition.

Twitter Recap: A night of complete energy and extremely tight playing by the band, capped off with the first five-song encore since 1991. This run is looking to be one for the books after the opener.

Rating out of 5: 4.3

Buy/download/pass: Buy this show ASAP. The first set had great moments with a version of “Wolman’s” in which Page took over and calmed down, and an energy-filled “Alumni > Page > Alumni.”

Second set was where the jams started to roll out with the “Sand > Light > Dirt > Waves > Undermind > Steam > Fire” elements segment.

The encore is another story. After tight versions of “Camel Walk,” “Guyute” and “Horse > Silent in the Morning,” the very different but killer “Hood” jam was the perfect way to end an almost perfect night.

The venue was awesome, giving everyone good sightlines of the band and a very clean sound. My only problem was the lack of bathrooms. Lines took up to 15 minutes and the over packed bathrooms were very claustrophobic.

But enough with the complaining because the show made up for even the slightest mishaps the venue had.

August 16 – UIC Pavilion – Chicago, IL

Set I: Dinner and a Movie, Ha Ha Ha > Chalkdust Torture, Mexican Cousin, Walls of the Cave > Runaway Jim > Foam, I Didn't Know, Ocelot, Ginseng Sullivan > The Wedge, Limb By Limb, Let it Loose
Set II: Down With Disease > Twist > Backwards Down The Number Line > Theme From The Bottom > Golden Age > A Day In The Life > You Enjoy Myself
Encore: Heavy Things > Slave to the Traffic Light > Rocky Top

Crowd Atmosphere: Tonight’s crowd seemed very excited although after last night’s incredible show, everyone I talked to thought tonight had to be a step down.

Best Song: You Enjoy Myself (pretty solid version with a bit more extended middle than recent versions)

Best Jam: Down With Disease

Best Segue: Down With Disease > Twist

Sloppiest Moment: The first set was fun, but it didn’t contain much flow. I enjoy a “Let It Loose,” but it was oddly placed and left the building the most quiet since the doors opened.

Twitter Recap: Tonight’s first set lacked a consistent flow, but second set monster DWD made up for any mistakes of the night.

Rating out of 5: 3.7

Buy/download/pass: I would download this show for the “Down With Disease” alone, but also some standout jams were a Bowie-esque “Chalkdust Torture,” a solid “Walls of the Cave,” a high-energy “Theme From The Bottom” and a “Limb By Limb” that brought way to a very funky middle section.

August 17 – UIC Pavilion – Chicago, IL

Set I: Colonel Forbin's Ascent > Fly Famous Mockingbird, Gumbo, Possum, Weigh > The Divided Sky, Alaska, Bathtub Gin, Maze, Cavern, First Tube
Set II: Crosseyed and Painless > No Quarter > Timber (Jerry) > Tweezer > Prince Caspian > Piper > Ghost > Makisupa Policeman > Sleep > Buffalo Bill > Golgi Apparatus > Character Zero > Run Like an Antelope
Encore: Funky Bitch > Show of Life > Tweezer Reprise

Crowd Atmosphere: On lot a bit earlier today, and right away I saw numerous people looking for tickets. Everyone seemed a little drained after the last two nights, but still very excited for the last night of a really great run.

I went into the venue early and got a spot about 10 rows back Page side – a really great view. Everyone around was aware of each other’s space minus a few people here and there, one person being the girl with the “Funky Bitch” sign. It’s great that they played the song on your sign, but don’t hold it up the whole song so everyone in back of you can’t see.

Other than this the crowd was very respectable.

Best Song: Piper

Best Jam: Crosseyed and Painless ("Piper" also had a phenomenal jam in it)

Best Segue: Crosseyed and Painless > No Quarter

Sloppiest Moment: Trey during “Golgi Apparatus” was cringe worthy. I mean, I love the song, but if you can’t play the middle section, then stop playing it.

Twitter Recap: The first set was filled with energy and there were many songs that Trey took over and peaked again and again. Second set started off great, but lacked extended jams and had forced transitions. This was a very fun show to be at, though.

Rating out of 5: 3.6

Buy/download/pass: I would download this show to check out the “Crosseyed” and see if you enjoy it, because to be honest, I thought many of the teases were forced. I feel that Trey was focusing more on putting that tease in songs rather than extending the jam. It was almost like he was trying to turn this show into something like Utica with all of the “Guyute” teases, but the outcome was not as “epic” as he wanted.

This three-night run was an outstanding way to wind down the well-played second leg. Each night had its moments that I will remember for years to come.

Next up for the boys is Colorado, and I wish I could make the journey. All I need now is a New Year’s Eve announcement to make my year complete. But until then, you’ll find me re-listening to this run just as much if not more than any 3.0 show thus far.
