Gravity A Brings NOLA Funktronica To Colorado
- Published on September 12, 2012
- By Slave2Traffic
Just about everyone knows that New Orleans is famous for its fusion of jazz, funk, soul, blues, R&B, rock, hip hop and any number of other musical styles. But did you know about the city’s burgeoning dub, house and electronica scene? If you did, you’re probably familiar with Gravity A, a band who will take their unique sound from the bayou to the mountains on their first tour of Colorado later this month.
Gravity A describes their style as “New Orleans funktronica-jam-rock,” a melding of styles that is befitting of the band’s sound and the city they call home. With influences running the spectrum from The Meters, Medeski Martin and Wood and Jimi Hendrix to STS9, the Disco Biscuits, Break Science and Ween, the four-piece continues to wow fans until sunrise, be it in New Orleans or on the festival circuit.

Having played up and down the east coast and at festivals such as Hangout, Bear Creek, Voodoo and Aura, Gravity A are no strangers to the road. However, the band locally known for their Wednesday night residency at Blue Nile and their frenetic late night Jazzfest-closing sets at the Dragon’s Den will soon travel on a brief tour of Colorado. For their stops in Durango, Boulder and Denver, Gravity A will play with Scott Messersmith of Colorado-based The Motet, before travelling back across the country for gigs in Missouri and along the Gulf Coast, finishing up with a show at Tipitina’s opening for Zoogma.
“From the first time I saw a live band perform live D&B (STS9 at High Sierra in 2003), I knew that I wanted to create live electronica,” says drummer Michael Fouquier. “I feel like Gravity A has played a huge part in preserving the electronica scene in New Orleans.” Almost anyone who has seen Gravity A play would probably agree.
You can download a free copy of Gravity A’s new studio EP “Renegade Masters” here or visit the band’s website or Facebook page for more information.
