The chilly temperatures and sporadic rain showers couldn’t put a damper on the third annual Domefest, located in Beltsville, Maryland this past April 28. Jeremy Schon, lead guitarist of Baltimore-based band Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and co-founder of Groovehouse Productions, organizes the intimate regional festival, which is quickly becoming one of the Delmarva region’s most talked about events.

Pigeons’ set – which was bookended by fellow Baltimoreans Jesters of Kindness and Psycho Killers –brought with it the signature blend of funk-inspired dance grooves that have earned the foursome some much deserved attention from the East Coast.

Highlights included a unique twist on “Somewhere Over The Rainbow,” a Phish medley of “Down With Disease” and “Run Like An Antelope” and originals like the catchy “Julia” and soaring jam vehicle “Horizon.”

The Psycho Killers, a Talking Heads tribute act, skillfully took on the material of the post-punk, new-wave legends, shining on renditions of “Cities” and “Crosseyed and Painless,” during which Schon sat-in.

The night was headlined by rising livetronica stars, Zoogma. The Memphis, Tennessee-based foursome was right at home with their heavy-hitting, beat-driven dance party. Though the rain started to pick up, the band and crowd trucked along making for a wild set.

Zoogma’s blend of electronica, rock and hip-hop flooded the Domefest crowd, soaking them with their unique wave of livetronica-rock. Sampling popular songs amidst their technically sound jamming only added to the experience and solidified them as one of the most creative and versatile bands in the game today.

Domefest’s tradition of featuring the most promising young talent in the scene held true this year as Zoogma became the latest jamtronica act to headline Domefest, following Basshound and Papadosio in the first two years respectively.

Never a party to die down, the set breaks at Domefest were graced by the addictive dance vibes of Sneakers in the Dryer, also known as Eric Henderson, and DJ collective Business Casual Disco. Forgoing the typical heavy bass for some bouncy nu-disco, the music was non-stop and kept the vibes positive all day long.

The intimacy of the festival and the promise of the scene’s most talented up-and-coming young musicians attracted a sold-out crowd that descended upon the Domes for the third and biggest Domefest party to date.
