Headstash On The Road: Wanee Day 2
- Published on April 21, 2012

Friday at Wanee brought warm, beautiful weather and a stellar full day of music. My first show of the day was the Tedeschi Trucks Band. Anxiously waiting for the show to start at the Peach Stage, the sun was scorching and the open field offered little refuge from its wrath. Pint-sized Susan Tedeschi took the stage and opened with a song off of their latest album, “Don’t Let Me Slide” to a packed crowd.
The married couple and recent Grammy winners played one of the tightest sets I’ve seen from them and were on fire from start to finish. Susan’s voice carried the length of the field with the weight of 10,000 Sirens and Derek’s guitar sang equally as powerful.
Derek offered an extended guitar solo during “Midnight In Harlem.” Smiles stretched the length of the stage and into the crowd as seemingly every patron sang along. Love and admiration protrudes from the stage when Derek is shredding and Susan is looking on adoringly.
During a teased out version of the song “Bound For Glory,” Susan came out of left field with a nasty guitar solo. Playing with the same tenacity her husband is so well known for, she seemed to be vying for her own spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Towards the end of the set the band busted out a killer rendition of The Beatles’ “Why Don’t We Do It In The Road” back into “Bound For Glory,” showcasing Susan’s out-of-this-world pipes. Paired with a polished horn section and Oteil Burbridge on bass, The Tedeschi Trucks Band somehow finds a way to touch a place in listener’s hearts that they may not have known even existed.
After the set, I rushed over to catch the end of Zach Deputy at the Amphitheater Stage. It wouldn’t be a festival at the Suwanee without the teddy bear himself gracing our ears. The usually one-man jam band is currently touring with a full group of musicians, and it’s a great look for him.
Playing with a full band gives Deputy more of a chance to showcase his exceptional vocals. Always in great spirits and light hearted, the band closed with a new song about a sandwich that Deputy announced was dedicated to Jimmy John’s.
Next up was Wanee headliner, Furthur, set to play a relaxed, afternoon show. The guys played a great mix of classic Dead songs and jams including “Scarlet Begonias” and “Fire On The Mountain.” Music enthusiasts both young and old sang along to every word and the vibe at this show was immeasurable.
After Furthur, I ventured out to catch Suwanee regulars Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk on the Amphitheater Stage. The funky Neville clan played two hours of straight Parliament Funkadelic covers including “Mothership Connection” and “Wants To Get Funked Up.”
Tony Hall, donning a captain’s hat, offered his usual playful banter to the crowd and the entire band seemed to be having a great time. Set highlights included a unique interpretation on Dr. Dre’s “Let Me Ride.”
After a funked-out great time at the amphitheater, I geared up to catch festival hosts, The Allman Brothers Band. Friday was their first of two sets and to no surprise the longtime musicians crushed it.
Fans grew worried when two songs in Gregg Allman had to briefly leave the stage. A recent bout of illness forced the musician to cancel a slew of shows and concertgoers were sending positive vibes and love that the legendary keyboardist would pull through.
Thankfully a revolving door of musicians stepped in to lend a hand including Susan Tedeschi and Bob Weir. Weir was present in for a fantastic cover of The Band’s “The Weight” (in tribute to Levon Helm no doubt) and “Midnight Rider” was of course a crowd favorite.--
The last day of Wanee features The Allman Brothers Band, Furthur, EOTO, Gov't Mule, Leftover Salmon, North Mississippi Allstars and more. Stay tuned for more coverage from Wanee 2012.

Headstash On The Road: Wanee Day 1
- Published on April 20, 2012
- By Julia Stewart
Last night officially kicked off the eighth annual Wanee Music and Arts Festival at the majestic Spirit of the Suwanee Music Park in Live Oak, FL.
In a sense, Wanee is the last unicorn of jam festivals, with an authentic lineup featuring the best in improvisational rock and roll. Having been to the grounds two dozen times and fortunate enough to call the SOSMP a second home, I always forget how insanely huge Wanee festival actually is. Seemingly intimate gatherings held at the park like Bear Creek or Magnolia Fest are mere small cookies compared to the gargantuan that is Wanee.
Upon arrival, the grounds were packed to the brim and although traffic was moving slowly there is thankfully no five-mile long line of cars to wait in at the SOSMP. Once you’re in, you’re in, and no matter where you are in the park, the massive oaks, Spanish moss, sun and smiles stretch as far as the eye can see.
The scenery and vibe at the Suwanee Music Park is something I’ve written about many times thought its magic is tough to put into words. The feeling that engulfs you the second you enter the park is really indescribable. The Sprit of the Suwanee is alive – it’s a reckoning force of love, respect and camaraderie that is inherent in every single patron, musician and staff member.
Having recently relocated to Colorado after a lifetime in Florida, this particular trip to the Suwanee was a special one for me. Although no longer in my backyard, the place has never felt more like home. I arrived in time to set up camp alongside the lake before the typical Florida afternoon rain reared its ugly head, soaking the campgrounds and keeping festivalgoers at bay for hours.
The rain subsided in time to see Hot Tuna Electric destroy the beloved Amphitheater Stage for a two-hour set. The over-four-decade old band still plays with the tenacity of a group of 20-somethings.
The classic tune “Hesitation Blues” was a set highlight and mandolin player Barry Mitterhoff was a supreme treat to the ears. Being under 25 at Wanee actually puts you in the minority category and it was a humbling feeling to glance around the crowd and behold a sea of seasoned, old-school music lovers.
Next up was one of the only live electronic acts on the bill, Conspirator. The former Disco Biscuits side-project turned full-time act closed out the night to a crowd of rage happy youngsters. A laser light ceiling stretched the length of the Amphitheater and the guys took their time progressing into a full on electro heavy dance party.
Aiming to please the crowd they busted out a killer rendition of “Scarlett Begonias” early in the set and weaved in and out of spacey, guitar led jams.
In true Conspirator fashion, as the night grew later the set got increasingly more electronic and synth heavy resulting in a full-on rave-like atmosphere.
From Hot Tuna Electric to Conspirator, the first night of Wanee offered some interesting insight into the evolution of music and was an excellent kick off to what is sure to be a killer weekend of live tunes.

EDC NYC Lineup Announced: Armin van Buuren, Bassnectar, Pendulum, Carl Cox

The circus attraction continues to spin more out of control at MetLife Stadium. And no, I’m not talking about Tim Tebow and the Jets.
Electric Daisy Carnival New York City has officially released its full lineup and, for once, West Coast fans of the music carnival may have to adjust to Eastern time as it’s looking very ambitious.
Set to go off on May 18 through May 20, with four stages and plenty of artists to go around including Armin van Buuren, Afrojack, Bassnectar, Chase and Status, Pendulum, Nero, Carl Cox and a “Very Special Surprise Guest,” the stadium should be rocking all weekend. The complete day-by-day and stage-by-stage lineup is below.
And just so we're clear, MetLife Stadium is in fact in New Jersey.
Needless to say, it should be a pretty interesting show, especially slowly rising on a drop tower. Or peering from the top of a ferris wheel. Or even on the ground behind the wheel of a bumper car.
Three-day passes are being sold on Ticketmaster staring at $283.60 and you can also find them on the EDC New York website. For more information on ticketing information and the lineups of all the major summer festivals, check out our 2012 Music Festival Guide.

Innaugural Counter.Point Music Festival Converges On Atlanta This September
- Published on April 19, 2012
- By AUS10B
Today, C3 Presents and MCP Presents, the folks that bring you Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza, and Camp Bisco, respectively, announced the creation of another festival dubbed Counter.Point.
Set to take place from September 28 to 29 at the location of 2007′s The Echo Project, Counter.Point will offer on-site camping in addition to an arts village, extreme sports demonstrations, a beer garden featuring local breweries, a food truck component, local chefs and a college football viewing area.
The 350-acre, scenic Chattahoochee river front location where the freshman festival will occur is just 30 minutes south of metropolitan Atlanta.
[FIND complete lineups, ticketing information and analysis of all your favorite upcoming festivals via 2012 Festival Guide.]
Full lineup and event information is forthcoming, but it appears that festival organizers are looking to combine camping and the primarily electronic music atmosphere of Camp Bisco with the commercial attraction and wide appeal of Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza (i.e. extreme sports, college football viewing, other bro-tastic attractions).
It could make for an interesting mix, given that Atlanta boasts both an extremely Southern, SEC-driven population as well as a thriving independent electronic music scene and the heads to match.
Expect major names from the EDM scene, along with local and regional jamtronica bands, and perhaps some hip-hop thrown in as well -- after all, it is Hotlanta.

Today, High Sierra Music Festival released their second round of lineup names who are set share the stage with Ben Harper, STS9, Railroad Earth, Galactic, Greensky Bluegrass and more. Intermixing electronic acts such as Big Gigantic and Paper Diamond with the likes of punkalectic Garage A Trois and aggressive bluegrass trio, Split Lip Rayfield, Quincy, CA will be weaving the airwaves with multiple genres this July 5 to 8. Check down below for the full list of second additions for the 22nd incarnation of the festival.
For the full lineup check out our 2012 Festival Guide, and watch the video below to see how High Sierra rolled out this year's acts.
This camping event creates an intimate environment of around 10,000 attendees, focusing on being family-friendly. Accentuated with a “kids zone,” lively parade, family camping area and a vaudeville-style performance troupe – festivalgoers of all ages will find themselves entertained and satisfied.
Another highlight of High Sierra is the artist "Play Shops," which offer a unique and highly entertaining forum for fans to interact with some of their favorite musicians. Last year, members of Elephant Revival demonstrated vocal harmony styles while Toubab Krewe presented the 21-string African Kora, revealing how an ancient instrument translates into contemporary performances.
While this year’s Play Shops have not been announced just yet, periodically check back on the festival's official website for updates and schedule releases.
If all of this combined with the pleasant summer setting of rugged canyons, crystal clear lakes and a grassy meadow doesn’t entice you, we’re not sure much else will. But if top-performing musicians combined with one of the most welcoming festival grounds is calling your name, head over to High Sierra’s online ticking outlet and snag an Early Bird four-day pass for a mild $185.00, which includes on-site camping and no processing fees.
